Looking for something different to do, and with your race rig?

I was looking at the Steam summer sale (Till July 9th) and saw Euro Tuck Simulator2 (ETS) on sale for $4.99. I’ve seen this before and was intrigued but didn’t want to spend $30 on it, but for $5 worth a shot. Without getting too long here I’ve spent over 4 hours on it this week, its very addicting. Also while checking the sale I seen there is American Trucking Simulator (ATS), again for $4.99, same developer. I bought it last night and put in 2 hours on it. It’s just fun to be driving a big truck down the road listening to the radio( Internet stations). You use GPS map display to find you destination.

Brief description: They are career based games the object being to start you own business and grow it with more trucks and employees. It’s also a very good semi-truck simulator. You get to drive in real countries or states and on real roads with traffic, there is weather and day/ night. Although time and distance is compressed. Lots of configuration things you can adjust and sets up with my race rig using the G27. Using the 6 speed H Shifter you can get up to a 18 speed transmission, the paddle shifters can be used too or you can just use an automatic tranny. Everything can be mapped to a button, default is keyboard.

Of course there is a huge online community around both these sims, web sites, forums and modders. There is some DLC but a lot of free content from better sounds to trucks/ trailers and maps to download. Also tons of skins, so I'm assuming like RF it's something the average person can do.

Ok so if you’ve read this far you’re asking, is it online? Well technically no, but there is a 3rd party “Mod” that allows you to join one of 6 servers and drive the same roads with other real people driving trucks hauling loads. When I checked the live map this afternoon the #1 ETS server had 3,300 people on it, right now at 8:30 central in the evening the ATS server has 570 on it. http://www.truckersmp.com

So go check them out on Steam and the American one is easier only due to the wider open spaces of the south west. https://store.steampowered.com/app/270880/American_Truck_Simulator/

So help me I bought Euro.. last year when it was on sale and loved it.
I was delivering oranges,
getting caught speeding,
backing it in,
Upgraded my garages a few times.
Had a relaxing, good time.
5 bucks is worth it.

Grrr, presumably easier on my eyes than Resident Evil 2 on my PS2, I'll probably go get it, especially as I paid for RF2 but never set up Steam; might as well get both squared away.

Could be more fun for the kids that come over for Christmas than rFactor.

I've been driving ATS (200 hours) and ETS2 (300 hours) for a few years now. I often use it to wind down before bed after a stressful race night or just as a diversion when my wife is watching a chick flick. Often I'll load up the in-game radio stream or a Spotify playlist and listen to music for an hour or two while I drive.

It's now got an additional layer of fun because WA and OR have been added so I'm driving virtual versions of roads I've really driven.

Awesome guys! I've been putting in some hours and miles. I bought the DLC ATS New Mexico map for $3.50 and got the free graphics improvement and real sounds mods for both ETS2 and ATS. Drove a 900+ mile run last night.

I think I'll wear out the shifter and clutch on the G27 with these, lots of rowing through gears.

That game ruined my G27 last year. Got addicted to it, drove like 400 hours. If you go on the grass thats give a lot of kicks to the wheel. As an alcoholic I drove a lot in the grass. Needed to replace the wheel haha :P

I often have a few drinks while playing these games. The more I drink, the less I care about speed limits :D

So drinking and driving can destroy your wheel and get you speeding fines, good to know. Guess that happens in real life too. ;) I don't drink so maybe I'll be ok on both fronts, might turn down the wheel settings a bit though just to be safe.

Bought my first truck last night and took it on it's first run this morning. So far haven't taken out bank loans and just using cash to upgrade, may just stay a one man operation for awhile.

So did some reading on the compressed time and distance, the maps are 1/20 scale so the time is too. This way 60 mph will get you 60 miles in an hour in game time, 1 minute is 3 seconds but in the cities the scale is expanded a bit so you don't just blow through them and can drive to get to your destination. But still some of those 1.000+ mile drives are like an hour and you have to strategize you fuel stops and required sleep stops. Then the added in random emergency road closures and re-routes.

Enjoying the driving because I've driven all over Arizona, driven to Las Vegas from Phoenix and been through New Mexico several times diving, so fun to see cities and places I've actually been to. I may have to buy the Oregon DLC map, because it looks there is a full USA map mod if you have all of them except Washington isn't needed. And Idaho was just announced to be out later this year

Pat and Rich have purchased the game now, maybe we'll have to start EFNET Trucking Company for the online mod. :D

I told them last night that there are a couple of resources I found helpful so here they are. A lot of it I just kind of figured out and I have a lot more to learn.

A guide as to some setup and what is what. https://guides.gamepressure.com/americantrucksimulator/

And a guide to the shifter config. https://eurotrucksimulator2.com/input_config.php

The next time that I play, I'm going to run into a police car to see if I get pulled over

I pulled out of parking lot to start my run and right into a police car that I didn't see. His lights came on and siren going, I continued on figuring I'd get a ticket or something but nothing happened. Maybe the hit disabled his car. :o

Well the game hud is far right on my 3rd monitor, looked back after 30 minutes into a haul and ran into a pole. Dozing at this point too. Managed to hang it up on the rails at the gas station, finally dislodged, found sleep and repair and now ready to continue on with my first haul. I will be late and still hoping to get paid. LOL

Point of interest, had trouble getting it to move. Learned my control axis were 'inverted'. Switched to 'normal' and all is well. Oh yeah, no matter how good the GPS is, you can go the opposite way without knowing. Just watch your ETA and you'll realize it. Added another 20 minutes or so. Hope I make it to Barlow in time.

I'm still trucking along, hows everyone else doing?

I'm currently on my longest run from just south of Albuquerque New Mexico to Redding California some 1,200+ miles. Last couple of nights only had about 45mins of time each night and looks like I'm only around half way.

Think I'm going to add some more mod content too.

Zero miles since the week I bought it, ain't got time for that, enjoying rF2 and race tracks a lot more than driving somewhere in a big rig stressing about the speed limit, police and being on time, I do that on a daily basis in real life.

I do appreciate the interesting aspects of real world locations portrayed in the game so I'll probably spend more time with it in the winter.

My goal is to progress far enough to own my own rig so that the kids can drive just the tractor during the winter holidays.

Tom I've had my own truck for awhile now and makes it way more fun, now I have a trailer too but haven't used it yet. There are stand alone car mods for this that you can just go a drive a car around on the roads. Once installed they also have to be bought at one of the truck dealers.

I just got to level 17 last night. I also installed my first non-Steam mod, it's really easy to do. It's another truck, I will buy it tonight and try it out.

Besides the Steam workshop for ATS this is another place to get good mods that are not there yet. https://forum.scssoft.com/viewforum.php?f=183

Another place to get mods. https://atsmod.net/

I've been running these for a bit now. More so ETS2 than ATS admittedly. Speaking off, probably time for another haul at some point this week. 8-)

Check out World of Trucks if you haven't yet. They do seasonal events w/ special hauls for various bonuses. Also an easy way to stay abreast of upcoming changes/additions to both ATS & ETS2.

Yes I'm on World of Trucks too, higher paying hauls that way. ;)

I need to run some more ETS2, didn't do much of it then got ATS and that's all I've been doing. Little more skills now so maybe ETS2 won't be as hard as it was. :D

I have an easier time on ETS2. Them little cab-overs are so much more nimble.

I'll usually bounce back and forth between freight market & external contracts...depends on which has the best $$$/km from the city I'm currently in. It's frequently external, but not always.

I found myself in need of some entertainment and ATS fulfilled.

I kept pushing buttons on my G27 until the cruise control took hold and found the music folder and added MP3s so much better.

Impressed by how the nice the roads, scenery, people, buildings and other vehicles are albeit that is largely from spending most of my gaming time with rFactor which has cardboard cutouts for people

Too much to learn. At one point, I was advised to "manually adjust my route" which led to driving off road and blowing through a road block when the GPS brought me back to the same closed off ramp.

Christmas will be upon us in a minute, need to earn that money!

Endless fun, thanks KJ!

Your welcome Tom. I guess the appeal to me is that it is NOT racing, just tasks to do and discover new area's. Plus the driving a big rig and listening to the radio is fun!

As for me I got deeper into it last night. A few days ago I bought another garage, located it in Phoenix. It has room for three trucks. I had downloaded another truck mod( Non Steam) last week, Kenworth K100-E Aerodyne, (Video of mod https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=p1pZ9BMXWCk). After buying the new garage( They cost $180,000), I needed more money before I could actually buy and drive this new truck so more hauling. Bought it last night, it is really nice in the short distance I've gone. The next thing I did was hire a driver for my other truck, she made -$310 on her first run, still in training. So now I need to make sure I'm also managing the trucks and the business. :)

My first thought that was excellent job on hiring a woman for a male dominated job.

Second sent me on a quick image search, this'll do for now:

Thanks Dale, I looked at it and its already nearly done. I only drove ETS2 a couple of nights before doing only ATS so I didn't have much money and don't own my own truck yet. Last night took a break from ATS and got back into ETS, and now knowing how the sims work it was much easier. I'm doing jobs to build up money to buy my own truck then go from there. Sure a lot more places and roads to drive in ETS, was getting a little bored in ATS on some of the jobs of driving the same highways back and forth between New Mexico and California.

Might have to pick up a ETS2 DLC map expansion with them being on sale right now, thinking Italy.

This reshade project is worth watching for a release. Looks much better in some ways.

The community goal is complete but I believe you can still get the achievement and gift if you do the required number of transports before midnight tomorrow.

However... if you don't own a lot of garages you may have a challenge. Because I own almost all of them, I can teleport to the cities with the shortest jobs. :)

I don't want to give a spoiler to those that like to discover things on their own but if you explore out-of-bounds a little then there's a surprise on the ATS map. ;)

Here's a shortened URL for those that want the surprise:

Thanks for the tip Dale, I'll hold off on the surprise for now. :D

I only have two trucks and two garages in ATS and only the default garage in ETS so don't think I'm going to be able to do the Goodyear task. Oh well maybe next time.

Guess I should have bought the Italy DLC yesterday morning when I looked at it because the goal was reached and it was back to full price last night. Guess I'll wait for another steam sale.

ETS sure has more going on, towns, roads and scenery. I ended up taking out a bank loan last night to buy my first truck, it was a mod truck. Now I can start making some real progress.

I bought both of these titles this year during various Steam sales and found them both to be a lot of fun, also! I cannot seem to figure out why though. I guess I do tend to try and see how much time I can cut off the estimated TOA, and use gas stations as chicanes. :)

Hi Caleb, great to hear from you. Another fellow trucker. :D

I know I can't really explain it either, it's just fun along with some challenges. I've been only doing the Euro sim lately and it sure has a lot more challenge to it plus scenery.
