The 2017 Sports Car Challenge Series is half finished, Summer is dwindling so it's time to look ahead to Fall and the Trans Am series.

This will be the 5th season for the V8s but for the first time both Pros and Sportsmen will be driving the American production-based 305 cubic inch pushrod V8 powered cars that made the real world SCCA Trans Am series one of the best racing series in the world when it enjoyed its pinnacle.

A big part of the intention is to treat the veteran Sportsmen to the V8s, many of whom would otherwise never race them here. It doesn't hurt that the V8s are arguably easier to drive or at least keep on track than the small cars.

The Pro class has produced four different champions, each decided at the final race: Pat Sweeney (Chevrolet Camaro Penske), Rich Coffey (Ford Falcon), Brandon Smith (Ford Falcon) and Rich Minkler (1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28).

The Sportsmen class Under 2.5 cars went through more evolution with car classification than the V8s which, other than adding the Ford Falcon in 2014, has stayed true to the inaugural 2013 car list.

The 2013 Under 2.5 car list included the Alfa GTA, BMW 2002ti, Lotus Ford Cortina and Porsche 911S 2.0.

2014 added the Datsun 510 and 2016 added the Alpine A110 1600.

The past Under 2.5L champions are Juan Ciminari (Lotus Ford Cortina), Kit Tarboton (Alfa GTA), Sherman Baumann (Datsun 510) and Yoan Lamontagne (Porsche 911S).

There is room for discussion about adjusting or excluding the Ford Falcon, not because it enjoys an unfair advantage but rather that it gets around most tracks differently from the other cars, it never featured in the real Trans Am series and to encourage drivers to give give the unappreciated Chrysler cars a chance. After Races with all of us in Falcons would be a blast...

The track selection will be difficult as always, more so because we are faced with a shortened season that is projected to be 11 race weekends. I haven't decided on a theme yet but realistically we'll be confined to the USA with maybe one foreign excursion max plus the pre-season Dave Berman Memorial at Mosport.

With Sportmen in the mix, I hope that some of the Pro drivers to whom the fun to effort ratio with the V8s has historically been too low will come race. The big Trans Am cars are certainly different from anything else that we drive and one could argue unrealistic but it's the same for everyone and there's no arguing against the overall result which has been close racing and championships and there are many top drivers whom the Trans Am crown has eluded.

I have to send Ferrari a sympathy card.

As is my custom, with new tracks, I pick a Historix car and blast around for awhile getting to know it.
As I don't recall being on the A1 Ring, and we're racing it in our Sports Car Challenge, I chose the 'Cuda to do my familiarization with, seeing how I haven't really tested it yet anyway.

It takes a long time to stop. Holy cow. And forget about turning on a dime. I need a whole buck and a half to get 'er done. Exchange rates make it even tougher. Navigating the Bismarck through a choppy minefield would take less attention.

But it was better.
There is more music in these older cars. More drama, and feeling. You can describe a Ferrari on a blackboard, with math, and lines.
You have to sing about the Plymouth. Engage it in poetry and impressions. And all that Ferrari can design and engineer cannot layer emotion onto cast iron and standard steering.

Sorry Ferrari. You cannot match a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda.
Anyone want me to sign their name to the card too?

I think our Trans Am series have consistently provided the most exciting racing, in my opinion. I am really looking forward to this season.

On the other hand, lots of slip angle to the tires, having to turn in early and period brakes that don't luck up instantly at 130 mph are perhaps the most realistic of any cars in the HGT mod. I'm certain that inadequate brakes was a real world problem not brakes that overwhelmed the tires with their stupendous fade resistant power.

I enabled ALL of the tracks that are on the 2017 schedule, in order.

I'm considering adding 1/2 race distance races during the week throughout the season with AI and qualifying at 18:30 PDT every evening Tue-Fri that I am able to reset the server at the right time so that we can get some practice in in a funner way.

edit 2017-10-13 20:59 PDT Make that 20:00 for qualifying. With a couple of ~12 minute races the whole thing would be less than 45 minutes and there's a much better chance that I'll get home in time to get the server going.

I could go for a Fun Night this evening but I probably won't be free until 20:00 PDT at the earliest.

Admin or two or more drivers can add AI. For whatever reason, rFactor was locking up when I tried to add 20 AI. 15 was fine. Please make sure that you boot AI before the last human leaves the server.
